2145

Ming Dynasty Underglaze Red Meiping Vase A Chinese Ming Dynasty meiping vase, measuring approximately 10 ins. high. The vase is freely painted in underglaze red in sections divided by sets of lines. The mouth and neck are surrounded by a scroll pattern, which is followed by scrolling, spkiy flowers and vines. The main body has water birds in lotus plants designs. The base has ruyi lappets with abstract leaf patterns. The foot is rough, unglazed and shows the orange burnt clay typical of Ming pieces. There are some old, small chips to the outer rim.
The quality of the porcelain, the use of freely painted underglaze red, the rough foot and the design elements all place this vase in the late Ming, probably the Wan Li period (1573-1619).

Chinese Junyao Square Lamp A Chinese Junyao lamp measuring 5 ins. square at the base and 3 ins. high, dating to the Song Dynasty. The candleholder is made of brown clay. The unglazed, recessed rim around the base suggests that this item once had a cover. The interior glaze is deep blue/green and brown. The rough potting of the piece indicates that this was made for everyday household use.

2218

Jun Kiln Lion Handle Blue Vase A Chinese Jun kiln vase, measuring 9 - 10 ins tall and 5 ins. across. The vase is made of yellow, sandy earthenware known as sha t’ai (what Hobson calls “soft Ch’un”). The foot is short, flared, and unglazed upwards to 2-3 inches. The body rises in a gradual flare to a gourd shape that tapers in at the shoulder and flares into a 6-petal mouth. There is an applied petal design around the shoulder as well as applied designs of paired fish on either side of the upper body. Two lion’s head handles with pierced nostrils adorn the sides.
The rich blue body glaze is thick and opalescent. It has some purple splotches and is finely crackled in different areas. The mouth is brown as are the upper edges of the applied designs where the glaze ran off during firing. The clay body can be seen on the unglazed portions, lying beneath what appears to be encrusted dirt from burial. There is one linear crack in the side from firing that measures approximately 5 inches. Flare mouth vases like this were popular in the Song Dynasty but were made into the Qing Dynasty. This vase has characteristics of the Song dynasty earthenware ceramics.

2493

Qing Dyn. Celadon Dragon/Phoenix Bowl A beautiful, thinly-potted Chinese celadon bowl measuring 7 1/2 x 2 3/4 ins., dating to late the Qing Dynasty. It has a pale green celadon glaze over a pure, white clay porcelain body. The bowl was formed over a mould of a dragon in flames. The bare rim and the glazed foot and footrim show that it was fired upside down. This was a typical way of firing Northern Song bowls.
However, do not confuse this bowl with one from the Song Dynasty. The porcelain body (it has a distinct ring), the "machined" smoothness of the body and the style of the dragon all place this in a later period, most likely late Qing when these classic wares where imitated. It is in fine and original condition.

Two Chinese Porcelain Bowls Two Chinese porcelain bowls being offered for one price. The first is a finely made Chinese bowl of pure white porcelain covered on the exterior in a yellow glaze enhanced with inscribed and overglaze enameled designs of vines and flowers with four roundels of dragons and birds with flaming pearls, dating to the mid 20th century. The bowl has a multicolor Greek key uppoer border. It measures 6 3/4 x 2 3/4 ins. The inner glaze has a few black specks but is otherwise in perfect condition. The base bears a four-character Chien Lung reign mark in overglaze red enamel, but the bowl does not date from this era. Its characteristics are more of those found in a fine turn of the century copy. <p>The second is a beautiful Chinese conical bowl with black underglaze and multicolor overglaze enamels in a flower and vine design on a pure white porcelain body, measuirn 7 x 3 ins. The bowl has a 20th century Jingdezhen mark on the base and is a fine example of the best of modern Chinese porcelain. It is in excellent and original condition.

2017

Chinese Copper Red Monochrome Vase A Chinese monochrome vase, measuring 9 ins. high and 4 1/2 ins. at its widest. The vase is made of white porcelain and has a low footrim. It rises gently from the foot to a rounded shape, then cuts back in to be joined by three rings of clay at the neck that rise into a flared mouth. The interior is covered with a fine clear glaze that shows the white body. The overall glaze is a copper-based matte red that fits into the general category of peachbloom or oxblood red.The base is glazed and has a 6 character archaic script QianLong mark. However, the mark has the 3-point trident in the zhi character that Allen notes as being incorrect for the period. The overall style of the vase, the footrim (I have added a comparison picture of this vase’s footrim and the Guangxu rim shown on p. 128 in Allen’s book), and the apochryphal reign mark all date this vase to the late 19-early 20th century at the latest.

Southern Celadon Lung chuan Ming Bowl <p><b>An Chinese celadon bowl measuring 5 1/2 x 2 1/2 ins., dating to late the 14-15th century Ming Dynasty.</b> The simple, heavily potted clay body has turned to reddish-brown with firing. The body rests on a glazed, straight footrim and curves upward to a reversed, rolled lip. The thick, olive green glaze has some bubbles near the foot.. The center interior is unglazed, as is the foot, indicating that this bowl was fired with another one stacked inside. Medly attributes the firing of bowls stacked one on top of another to the 14th century, Northern Song Yaozhou kilns. However, the reddish-brown change in the clay after firing is typical of southern celadon, or Lung ch’uan wares, as are the simple, unadorned design of this bowl and its thick glaze. This is a fine example of a Southern Chinese Lung ch’uan celadon bowl dating to the 14-15th century. It is in fine and original condition.

Sung Dynasty Celadon Bowl <p><b>A beautiful, thinly-potted Chinese celadon bowl measuring 7 x 2 3/4 ins., dating to late the Sung Dynasty (960-1280 AD)</b> It has a pale green celadon glaze over a porcelanous body that has turned to pale brown with firing. The rim is unglazed and has marks of an old metal protective covering. The interior has impressed designs of smiling boys and plants. It is in fine and original condition with some roughness of the rim as expected. <p>Scholars such as Warren Cox, Li Zhiyan and Cheng Wen attribute these wares to theYing Ching productions of the Sung Dynasty. The glaze of Ying Ching porcelains has been described as “misty blue”, which fits this bowl. The potters of the Northern Sung often stacked bowls together in the kiln to increase production. The rims were left unfired to prevent sticking to the kiln or other wares. As a result, they had rough rims that were often covered with gold or silver. This bowl has evidence of such treatment. The impressed design is typical of those found in the Northern ChineseYaozhou and Ying Ching kilns. It is finely done, which is another characteristic of later Song wares. It is a superb example of 1000 year old Chinese porcelain.
