1945

Set of Six Kutani Saucers A set of six matching Kutani saucers, measuring approximatley 5 ins. in diameter, dating to the late 19th-early 20th centuries. The saucers are decorated with peacocks in typical Kutani palette with extensive gold accents. The saucers are in excellent and original condition with only minimal wear. Two saucers have a 1/8 in. shallow chip out of the reverse rim that I have repaired. They are marked on the base with the artist signature, which I translate as SEN HAIGO.

2025

Edo Period Satsuma Pilgrim Flask Vase A Satsuma moon flask or pilgrim vase, measuring 14.5 cms. High and 5 cm across the conical base, dating to the mid 1800’s. The earthenware body is covered in an overall yellow/cream crackle glaze typical of Satsuma ware. It is decorated with medallions of gold classic scrolls with geometric designs and black/light blue and red highlights. There are wraparound designs of lotus flowers and pads with 2 cranes in pastel green, brown, pink and white. The conical mouth has a semi-circular border with circles and 2 gold and red floral medallions. The sides have dragon-head lugs; one has been repaired. The base has a squared, classical scroll border. There is a four-character seal impressed into the inside base, but I can’t decipher it beyond the left hand characters that read: SHO DAI SAN. There are small chips on the footrim.

1967

Satsuma Meiji Art Nouveau Vase A fine Japanese Satsuma baluster vase, measuring 18 ins. high and 8 ins. in diameter, dating to the Meiji era, ca. 1880. The earthenware body rests on a flared, recessed foot. The body swells gently to the shoulders where it cuts back in to form a cylindrical neck and flared mouth. There are two applied leaf handles. The typical, crackled, off-white Satsuma glaze can be seen on the interior and the base. The outside of the vase is covered in a deep green glaze. The central area has an overall flowers in an orange sky design in multicolor overglaze enamels. The neck is decorated with painted yellow-green leaves. The vase is marked with a size or number mark (No. 13) that was used for European customers to designate a pattern and size. The arfist has signed the vase on the base in gold, but too much of the signature has worn off to read it accurately. This is a fine, large Victorian era piece that would have graced the mantle or table of an upscale home. There are some old, gold fill-ins where some colors have worn around the base and shoulders. Otherwise the vase is in fine and original conditon.

Japanese Underglaze Red Kendi
A superb Japanese kendi of porcelanous body with a blue-white glaze and underglaze red design of vines, measuring 7 1/2 inches long and 7 ins. tall, dating to the Meiji Era (1868-1912). The kendi was used as a device for smoking and should not be confused with a ewer for liquids. You have seen these in the movies in the 1000 and 1 Arabian Nights pictures. The kendi is typically a Chinese ceramic piece that was made for the Middle Eastern market. This one has a paper label in Japanese attached to the base, which is one clue that it came from Japan. The foot rim and base are characteristic of Japanese ceramics as well.
