Japanese Oribe Boat Shaped Dish A superb Japanese green and yellow boat-shaped dish, hand modeled by an expert potter, measuring 10 X 5 X 2 ins., dating to the Meiji Era (1868-1912). The yellow and green glaze accents the fine modeling and wave patterns scribed into the sides. An unusual ceramic piece that has characteristics of Oribe ware in the glaze. This may have seen use in the tea ceremony or in ikibana.

492

Set of 3 Makuzu Kozan Studio Food Dishes A beautiful set of three, Japanese food dishes, made of earthenware and covered with a cream glaze and designs of flowers in overglaze enamels, measuring 6 1/2 X 1 1/2 ins., dating to the early to mid 20th century. Each plate is shaped like a leaf and bears a different floral design in brown, white and green, similar to the palate seen in Oribe ware. The design is consistent with the Kyoto Kenzan school. The floral patterns and overall design are similar in conception and execution to a set of five dishes by KOZAN III shown in the Winter 1996 issue of Daruma. The dishes are signed on the reverse in a white cartouche: KOZAN. I don’t know if this is the work of KOZAN III or KOZAN IV, since I do not have the box or any attribution. They are most definitely from the Makuzu Kozan studio. The plates are in excellent condition with no damage. I had minor rim chips (2-3 mm.) professionally restored on two of the three.

76

Set of 7 Oribe Meiji Covered Bowls A great set of seven (7) Japanese Oribe covered bowls dating to the late 19th - early 20th century. Each bowl measures 4 1/4 in. across and 2 in. high (2 1/2 ins. with the covers on). Each piece has a pottery body, a cream glaze, underglaze brown geometric designs, and a splash of lustrous green/blue glaze -- all characteristics of Oribe wear. Five are in excellent, original condition. Two of the bowls have had small rim chips repaired using a gold lacquer technique. This technique is used only for pieces to be considered valuable enough to warrant the expense. This is a fine, rare and original set of seven Oribe bowls.

673

Japanese Lacquer on Pottery Vase
A very unusual Japanese pottery vase with a fine, cream-white earthenware body, measuring 5 3/4 X 3 ins., dating to the Meiji or Taisho periods. This vase is covered with a fine crackle, cream glaze and is accentuated by slips of red, blue and tan that run down from the rim. The artist has used these glazes as clouds to hide an elegant coiled dragon done in raised gold lacquer. The base has underglaze cracks produced during one of the several firings needed to make this unique piece. They are not through and through and do not affect the structural integrity. A unique Japanese pottery and lacquer vase in original and fine condition.

Kutani Tripod Censor
A Japanese Kutani censor, measuring 3 x 3 ins., dating to the early 20th century. The earthenware body of the censor stands on three feet. The typical red/brown surface glaze is decorated with landscape design done in muted, old-style colors. The base bears both the kanji for Kutani and the artist’s signature. The latter indicates that this was a more valued piece, being worthy of the artist’s signature. Except for minor wear to the top with some gilt rubbing, the censor is in fine and original condition.

Famille Noire Studio Bowl - Fukugawa?
A fine and unusual Japanese studio bowl painted on the interior with three geisha in a garden on a famille noire, or black, background, dating to the late 19th - early 20th century. The garden scene contains wonderfully rich colors of trees, flowers and auspicious fungus as well as the superb kimono of the ladies. There is a floral, outer rim diaper and a brown palm leaf base diaper. The bowl measures 10 ins. across and 3 1/2 ins. high. The base has a kakihan mark of the artist. It is in original condition except for the restoration of a 1/8th in. rim chip that is not noticeable except on close inspection with magnification.
I believe this bowl to be from the Fukugawa studios because of the design elements and the similarity of the mark to those seen in Fukugawa wares. It may have been produced by one of the artists in the studio as an independent effort.
