178

Japanese Edo Period Wood and Lacquer Kushidai A Japanese Wood and Lacquer Kushidai, or traveling cosmetics case, dating to the Edo period. The case is constructed of wood covered with black lacquer and gold flat and slightly raised lacquer scrolling vine patterns with variations of the Kutsuwa, or bit, mon design adapted from the pieces on the side of the horse’s bit. Originally a military design, this crest was used by Christian families in the later Edo years because of the hidden cross design. The kushidai has four drawers with interior, sprinkled nashiji lacquer, each with a circular, crest copper alloy pull. There is some wear to the side handles and to the lacquer, especially on the top, but the piece is in otherwise great condition.
