A fabulous, finely carved Japanese netsuke or okimono, made of elephant ivory, of Buwo, or Wen Wang, the founder of the Chinese Chou state, measuring approximately 3 ins. high X 1 1/4 ins. wide, dating to the mid 20th century. Buwo is a legendary figure in Chinese history as the victor over the last Shang king and founder of the Chou dynasty around 1122 B.C. This Bronze Age Son of Heaven, as kings were referred to in those days, was protected by a dragon in battle. The netsuke-shi who carved this piece -- it is signed on the base -- depicts Buwo encircled by his protective dragon in detail. The carver has captured both Buwo’s energy and the strength of the dragon in this excellent work of art. |
