A fine and unusual Japanese studio bowl painted on the interior with three geisha in a garden on a famille noire, or black, background, dating to the late 19th - early 20th century. The garden scene contains wonderfully rich colors of trees, flowers and auspicious fungus as well as the superb kimono of the ladies. There is a floral, outer rim diaper and a brown palm leaf base diaper. The bowl measures 10 ins. across and 3 1/2 ins. high. The base has a kakihan mark of the artist. It is in original condition except for the restoration of a 1/8th in. rim chip that is not noticeable except on close inspection with magnification.
I believe this bowl to be from the Fukugawa studios because of the design elements and the similarity of the mark to those seen in Fukugawa wares. It may have been produced by one of the artists in the studio as an independent effort. |
