A Japanese Kutani censor, measuring 3 x 3 ins., dating to the early 20th century. The earthenware body of the censor stands on three feet. The typical red/brown surface glaze is decorated with landscape design done in muted, old-style colors. The base bears both the kanji for Kutani and the artist’s signature. The latter indicates that this was a more valued piece, being worthy of the artist’s signature. Except for minor wear to the top with some gilt rubbing, the censor is in fine and original condition. |
