A beautiful set of three, Japanese food dishes, made of earthenware and covered with a cream glaze and designs of flowers in overglaze enamels, measuring 6 1/2 X 1 1/2 ins., dating to the early to mid 20th century. Each plate is shaped like a leaf and bears a different floral design in brown, white and green, similar to the palate seen in Oribe ware. The design is consistent with the Kyoto Kenzan school. The floral patterns and overall design are similar in conception and execution to a set of five dishes by KOZAN III shown in the Winter 1996 issue of Daruma. The dishes are signed on the reverse in a white cartouche: KOZAN. I don’t know if this is the work of KOZAN III or KOZAN IV, since I do not have the box or any attribution. They are most definitely from the Makuzu Kozan studio. The plates are in excellent condition with no damage. I had minor rim chips (2-3 mm.) professionally restored on two of the three. |
