A beautiful, thinly-potted Chinese celadon bowl measuring 5 x 2 1/2 ins., dating to late the Sung Dynasty (960-1280 AD) It has a pale green celadon glaze over a porcelanous body that has turned to pale brown with firing. The rim is unglazed and has marks of an old metal protective covering. The interior has impressed designs of flowers and plants. It is in fine and original condition with some minor chipping and roughness of the rim as expected. This bowl comes with a silk-lined protective box of later date.
Scholars such as Warren Cox, Li Zhiyan and Cheng Wen attribute these wares to theYing Ching productions of the Sung Dynasty. The glaze of Ying Ching porcelains has been described as “misty blue”, which fits this bowl. The potters of the Northern Sung often stacked bowls together in the kiln to increase production. The rims were left unfired to prevent sticking to the kiln or other wares. As a result, they had rough rims that were often covered with gold or silver. This bowl has evidence of such treatment. The impressed design is typical of those found in the Northern ChineseYaozhou and Ying Ching kilns. It is finely done, which is another characteristic of later Song wares. It is a superb example of 1000 year old Chinese porcelain. |
