A superb Japanese kendi of porcelanous body with a blue-white glaze and underglaze red design of vines, measuring 7 1/2 inches long and 7 ins. tall, dating to the Meiji Era (1868-1912). The kendi was used as a device for smoking and should not be confused with a ewer for liquids. You have seen these in the movies in the 1000 and 1 Arabian Nights pictures. The kendi is typically a Chinese ceramic piece that was made for the Middle Eastern market. This one has a paper label in Japanese attached to the base, which is one clue that it came from Japan. The foot rim and base are characteristic of Japanese ceramics as well. |
