A fine Arita blue and white transfer charger of blue-white porcelain, measuring 12 1/4 ins. across and 1 3/4 ins. high, dating to the mid 19th century. The charger is decorated with a transfer pattern of a central roundel of a basket of flowers in early 19th century Chinese style, complemented by 3 fan-shaped floral reserves of peonies alternating with 3 separate peonies in an overall pattern of plum or cherry blossoms, all done in underglaze blue. The reverse shows spur marks and a four character mark in a double square in underglaze blue. There are floral sprays around the undersurface rim. The charger has one, old sealed age crack measuring approximately 1/2 in. and one restored 1/8 in. rim chip. A fine example of early Arita work. |
