A rare boxed set of eight Chinese inkstones, in their fitted box, which measures 12 x 9 ins., dating to the early to mid 20th century. Each stone is carved on the front with a scene of scholars that is highlighted with gold. The reverse sides have carved poems that are also highlighted. The second picture shows the different sides of two stones. The box has had some water damage and shows stains on the interior but it is intact. The stones show some loss of the gold highlihts but the carved designs are crisp. None of the stones appear to have been used. It is very difficult to find these sets complete, unused and with intact stones. A rare find for the calligrapher, painter or the collector of scholar’s desk items.
