An Chinese celadon bowl measuring 5 1/2 x 2 1/2 ins., dating to late the 14-15th century Ming Dynasty. The simple, heavily potted clay body has turned to reddish-brown with firing. The body rests on a glazed, straight footrim and curves upward to a reversed, rolled lip. The thick, olive green glaze has some bubbles near the foot.. The center interior is unglazed, as is the foot, indicating that this bowl was fired with another one stacked inside. Medly attributes the firing of bowls stacked one on top of another to the 14th century, Northern Song Yaozhou kilns. However, the reddish-brown change in the clay after firing is typical of southern celadon, or Lung ch’uan wares, as are the simple, unadorned design of this bowl and its thick glaze. This is a fine example of a Southern Chinese Lung ch’uan celadon bowl dating to the 14-15th century. It is in fine and original condition. |
